People who like writing, and heads of state signing treaties, are happy to pick up a fountain pen. Lawyers, doctors and poets all seem to have one, but more and more aficionados, bitten by writing jitters, increasingly feel like using pen and ink. With the correct choice of feather and ink, a handwriting lover lends character to her or his own text by giving it a unique style. We all write, but what we write with remains to be seen. They all show the time, but where one watch comes as a free gift from a mail order company selling beauty products, another costs a small fortune. Fountain pens are everywhere, but while scribblers perhaps expect to write more fluently, even beautifully, with a fountain pen, those who already have fine handwriting will certainly add some stately quality or even an everlasting beauty to their literary productions. A fountain pen has to have a handy grip, keep its balance well — not too heavy, light or small -, have a good flow of ink straight away and not act up while writing, certainly not leak or stain, be easy to fill and — if need be — repairable. In short, a fountain pen is a writing tool and has to function, no matter what. The present writer put two affordable pens to the test: They were purchased from two different, reliable sources on the internet:

Duofold Drawing a pen. Since the production of the first model in , our famous red capped pen has had many new faces. Fountain pens, rollerballs and pencils .
The trim work has been reduced to a single band, the cap features a stream lined clip and with a jewel finishing on the end cap. The ink window in the section is a feature I had not seen in a Parker pen prior to this one, which to me is a great addition. The striping runs parallel to the body and is really quite stunning. The blind cap is beveled to match the jewel end. The pen looks as though it could easily handle a drop off the desk.
All component parts fit well together and show signs of quality craftsmanship. The pen feels heavier than it looks. The diameter is slimmer than any other Duofold I have held and I find it uncomfortable to hold for long writing sessions. Slim pens tend to dig into my finger, this pen may not be suited for larger hands. The nib floats nicely across the page with little resistance.
The feed keeps up fine to flexible writing if not pushed too hard.

While the early production of this famous manufacturer is fairly well known, I have observed, when looking for information on the network, a lot of ignorance with regard to the French models and, in particular, concerning those introduced during the seventies. Such a situation has led me to prepare an illustrated, chronological listing of these latter. Anyway, it shows the most relevant models of the whole decade.

When I first saw the pen, I assumed it was from the 30s and that Greene must have owned it long enough for it to have sentimental value before he put it in his collected papers. But now I see that he must have bought it in or , shortly before he started to write The Heart of the Matter. Maybe he bought it just for that purpose? The cap screws on, and it has two small holes drilled in the sides which at first I thought might indicate the pen had once been mounted in a display case, but it turns out they are vent holes that are original to that model.
The pocket clip and the cap and barrel bands are gold-filled, and the non-metal parts of the pen are made of celluloid. All very unadorned and utilitarian. The pen showed hardly any signs of wear and tear, except that the tip of the the pocket clip was bent about 4mm away from the body of the cap. So here we are.

Some sources indicate that the model was produced as far back as , there’s even a dating in the official Parker archives that states that one of the Victories in there was manufactured in This is however highly unlikely, for several reasons. First of all the Victories were manufactured in the UK only and it is highly unlikely that Parker and the Valentine Pen Company, which was later to become the UK Parker factory, had started their co-operation that early.
Secondly the name Victory indicates that the production was in line with the war effort, but by even if Hitler had begun his world domination planning, the war was still four years away.
