Even the work has been okay. After a bit of context setting, vocab work and guided discussion in the first hour, I sit them down and tell them to write 5 questions for a first date. Because men are underrepresented in most of my classes, I have to even up the numbers and some of the women end up pretending to be male for the rest of the lesson. It seems to work well and students who barely say a word most of the time have surprised me, talking almost non-stop. A few even seem to have fun. The purpose of this assignment is to 1 expose students to current events in environmental science, 2 connect those stories to concepts covered in class, and 3 allow students to gain experience discussing important topics in environmental science. Students choose an article written in the last three months relevant to the field of environmental science. They can use any reliable news source, but are highly encouraged to use The New York Times.
Students write a brief summary of the article and describe the topics in the article that are relevant to topics that have been covered in class. Students work in pairs and have approximately three minutes to communicate the main points of the article to their partners. After students have had a chance to share with their colleagues, we discuss why they — as future environmental scientists — might need to communicate their science in a very brief time period. We discuss potential scenarios such as press conferences, discussing potential proposals with program officers at funding agencies and communicating with policymakers.
I have received positive feedback from many students regarding this assignment.

The structure of speed-dating brings people together in interactions designed to facilitate sharing information about themselves, asking questions of others, finding common interests and deciding whether they are interested in spending more time with the people they meet. As all our students have significant communication difficulties, our young people need additional support to learn and practice these skills and exercise their right to a social life. Our students are all exposed to a wide variety of communication tools including speech, sign, symbols, switches and VOCA in their tutor groups and around the college but the focus on student-led interaction enables them to problem-solve and explore other ways of expressing themselves and understanding their peers.
When the conversation is over, students indicate their opinions on the interaction before moving on to another conversation partner. Learning about mutual interest in building friendships enables students to explore appropriate interaction, develop their confidence and skills in interacting with others on a social level and making decisions about the relationships they want. The social environment of the disco enabled them to put their new learning to use in a practical context immediately.
The event is a great learning opportunity for students to share their different communication skills with one another.

Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going.

Monday, December 9, Book Speed Dating: I’ve wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week. I wanted to use a smaller “test” group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first. These classes are designed for struggling readers and generally have fewer than ten students. Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read.
I had the best results with the eighth grade class, who better understood all my dating jokes “sometimes you have to kiss some frogs”, “sometimes you have to throw that fish back in”, “if at first you don’t succeed”, etc. They really enjoyed this lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too.

Magic Marking With reports of teachers spending 60 hours a week working, there is always a need to consider how we can make life just a little bit easier. As usual, in our small working groups, staff discussed what they currently do, their concerns and problems, and we shared ideas and tried to support each other in finding ways to reduce time but increase the impact of our marking strategies. We started by marking a piece of work individually and then looking at the ways we had approached this.
Did we take the same amount of time? Did we find the criteria for marking helpful? What are we looking for when we mark?

Posted in Teaching by Tracy Perkins Oops! To review Garfinkel and Goffman, I played the speed-dating video below suggested by one of my students , and had the students analyze it in small groups with this worksheet. In a nutshell, we discussed how the video provides a good example of the unstated rules of interaction described by Garfinkel and Goffman who were lumped together with the French Structuralists by the course instructor, Andy Szasz.
Both people clearly come to the interaction with shared expectations for what happens on a speed-date, and successfully managed taking turns in conversation, flirting, and the other sorts of things meant to happen in this particular situational template. To help them with this latter task, I asked the following kinds of questions as I visited their small groups: Does it seem like everyone in the group came to the meeting with shared expectations about what would happen there?
